In addition to news about the recent Palm Pre FCC certification and happenings at Best Buy, there were a few more events in the world of webOS today. Below are a few tidbits from industry sources around the web to keep you on top of all the Pre news.
Another Pre spotted in the wild
We should be seeing a lot more of these as time goes on. PreThinking got another look at a Palm Pre in the wild, this time at an airport. The shiny new smartphone appears to be booting up, with the Palm logo showing on the screen. The device has previously been spotted on the Caltrain, in San Francisco at a Public Event, and running a YouTube App, among others.
Palm Pre makes impression on testers
Reports are out today that people have been busy testing the Pre, as ad impressions were recorded with the webOS user agent, reports mocoNews. “Initial Palm Pre impressions showed up on the network, as Palm apparently started to seed the market pre-consumer launch,” reports Millennial Media. The report also found that the iPhone is ranked number 2 on the list, after Samsung for ad impressions. Millennial Media is one of the largest mobile ad networks in the US, and the report confirms that users have indeed been viewing ads on the Palm Pre, pre-launch. More news after the break.
New Palm App Catalog details
A photo uncovered from back in January shows the Palm App Catalog, or at least a preliminary version of it, found Precentral. Earlier, we discussed the App Catalog and what it would take to be successful and compete with the iPhone App Store. The snapshot shows Pandora, News, Twitter and Chess under "Palm Presents", and Golf, Puzzle, Maxe and A La Carte under "Carrier".
A link at the top is also titled, "Search all 27 applications". So looks like there will be at least a few webOS games and apps to play around with during your busy schedule. Also, once webOS developers get the ball rolling, we should expect far more than 27 apps when the App Catalog opens for business.
No Visual Voicemail on Pre?
A representative from Palm has confirmed on Twitter that the Pre will NOT support visual voicemail, reports Precentral. However, it is still possible that a third-party app could enable this functionality in webOS. For those unfamiliar, visual voicemail adds a visual aspect to audio messages, allowing users to view a list of voicemail entries or even read transcriptions of voicemail. the iPhone, Instinct, and Storm smartphones currently support variations of visual voicemail.
Sprint sponsors Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
Previously, late night talk show host Jimmy Fallon "geeked out" with Engadget's Joshua Topolsky and the Palm Pre on his show. Sprint has continued along these lines, sponsoring the new webOS handset in the form of an ad during the show. The image that is featured (below) shows Sprint and the Pre, together with a logo of the show. Previously, Sprint released several podcasts and commercials as part of their ad campaign. Head over to Precentral for the scoop.
3 Reasons to sell Palm
An analyst for the Motley Fool took a pessimistic stance on Palm today, citing three reasons why now may be a good time to sell.
- Momentum rarely lasts - Investors are betting the the Pre will be Palm's savior, and with shares up 900% over December, it's likely the tides will turn.
- Premiums must be earned - While technologically the Pre is sound, investors have bid up shares so much that the device will struggle to exceed expectations in the end.
- Protection is paramount - Partners, specifically Elevation Partners must supply the capital to mend the cash-strapped Palm, and future cash injections will likely come by the way of stock sales, diluting interests of existing investors.
Palm stock closed at $10.33 today, down $0.32 (3%)
